The use of the SLAM-ER by F/A-18E Super Hornet fighters has drawn attention again after the release of images showing the missile in operations against Houthi targets in Yemen.
The photos, taken in April 2025 over the Red Sea, show a rare loadout for this fighter, highlighting the variety of weapons used by the USS Harry S. Truman’s Carrier Strike Group during its extensive mission in the region.
With a range of over 270 km and GPS and infrared imaging guidance capabilities, the SLAM-ER allowed the Super Hornets to accurately strike moving and stationary targets amid the complex air defense environment set up by the Houthis. The missile can also be retargeted in flight via datalink, a feature highly valued in a campaign where locating targets was one of the greatest operational challenges.
Although still a relevant weapon, the SLAM-ER has been appearing less frequently in U.S. budget documents, while the AGM-158C LRASM is gaining prominence as a long-range alternative. Even so, the operations in Yemen reinforce that the missile continues to play an important role in the Super Hornets’ arsenal, especially in missions requiring long-range precision strikes.
